CLOSING SCHOOLS IS NOT THE SOLUTION
Following the recent spate of unrest in schools, where more
than 100 schools have been razed down to ashes, destroying school and student
property. The government’s effort to try and contain the menace has been futile.
Elusive and on the contrary escalating
Closing the schools as proposed by Knut secretary general,
Wilson sossion is not the way to go. Claiming that students and teachers are
fatigued due to the extension of second term by just one week. It is more of an
escapist approach. As long as the underlying cause of unrest is not addressed
the problem will only be postponed to next term.
It is sad that the burning of schools is blamed singly on
the government, when the blame should go to all key players starting with
students burning schools, teachers, parents, school administrations and the
government for ineffective policies. Meanwhile as the shifting of blame by
teachers through their union and the government through the education minister
continue, more schools are continuing to burn at an alarming rate.
The government should
develop a policy framework that will deter students from participating in such arson.
When the schools are torched by debauched students, the first person to
shoulder the blame should be the board of management. The chief reason for
students burning schools is because of management where the students normally
feel their views are sidelined or disregarded. When the students set their
dormitories on fire, it is because they feel this is the only possible way to
communicate to the school management. They resort to burning of schools due to
highhandedness of school management, in which their opinions and grievances are
not taken into consideration
.
It is a white lie for Knut to impose the view that the
discontent in students is due to the prolonged term. No!. These are management
issues and non-commitment on the part of teachers. Perhaps the spirit of 50-60
percent pay rise has started haunting the government, education cabinet secretary
Fred Matiang’i should not be to blame.
Closing the schools as a desperate move, is only a short
term remedy. The school management should engage their students to find out
their grievances and develop a strategic plan on the same. Otherwise our
schools shall continue burning.
