RIP COMRADES
My sincere deepest condolences to the bereft families, the
seven slain patriotic gallant officers in Kapenguria. It is sad that by trying
to uphold the law, they paid with their dear lives. The officers resolve to
remand in custody a man suspected of links with Alshabaab terror group, lead to
their encounter with the brutal gun burrel.
It is completely
ridiculous and preposterous to blame the police officers for their own death
and to concoct somehow a political narrative out of this unfortunate occurrence. Of
course the police know better that apart from protecting the lives of the
masses, their own security is paramount. Even within the disciplined police
service, such disgraceful acts from rouge police isolated cases will always
occur. Radicalization is a far worse disease than the dragon of corruption.
Even within the police service itself it is almost impossible to completely
weed out Alshabaab adherents or sympathizers. To make the matter worse if the
suspect in question indeed had terrorist links, then it is possible that he has
already infected the innocent mind of his students and many in that locality
with his morbid religious ideologies.
Following this heinous brutality meted on our police officers.
It is therefore imperative that the campaighn against radicalization be
extended to the police service. The uniformed men and women should be vetted
afresh against radicalization and those found to be pro-terrorism
rehabilitated. There is need for better equipment to combat terrorists coupled
with a more advanced training so as to prevent more casualties during rescue
operations. It is sad that it had to take over 8 hours to bring the rogue
officer in control. And that the remandees did nothing toward helping the
police officers take control of the situation. Perhaps had the remandees helped
there would have been just one or two lives lost or even no loss of life. Even
though its not advisable to take action where a single move or a careless
utterance can attract a close range bullet, there are some situations where
something can be done especially where there is just a lone attacker. We thank
the police for the selflessness they portray while standing for their country.
May their souls rest in peace?
Danish Ocharo
Kitui.
